Measure O on the November ballot would extend Sacramento's utility users tax to text messaging, levying a 7% tax on texting. Besides texting, Measure O also extends a 7% tax to other forms of communication currently enjoyed tax free such as internet communications, paging, toll free numbers, custom features such as caller ID, call waiting and call forwarding, and even technology not yet available, such as interactive TV. Utility taxes are regressive and hit those least able to afford them the hardest. Measure O places the greatest burden on the teenagers and young people who are the biggest users of text messaging and internet communications. In cases where parents pay the bill, this tax is just another burden on struggling families. While texting is popular among young people, texting also is used by businesses to communicate instantaneously with clients, sending alerts and confirming tasks such as delivery. Text messaging is even used in emergency situations to warn people of danger. News reports have uncovered scandals where City politicians and bureaucrats cannot account for millions of dollars of missing funds. The City needs to learn to live within its means and act responsibly with the money it takes in already, rather than coming up with creative ways to raise more taxes on its already overtaxed citizens. Stop the texting tax. Vote NO on Measure O. |
